Tough Kid, Surviving Siberia in Style (2005)

Over a period of months, Ian Grinblat spent regular evenings with David Kay taking notes as David recalled his life from a prosperous early childhood in Belarus. The story covers his deportation to Siberia with his mother, Genia, as bourgeois (class enemies of communism) after the Soviet occupation in 1939, their successful struggle to survive the war years in appalling conditions, their repatriation and their post-war adventures as refugees in Germany and France. The story closes with their migration to Australia and the life they made in the new land. Between interviews, Ian wrote David’s memoir from the notes, concentrating on maintaining David’s voice in the narrative. The entire process required regular review sessions with David and frequent verification of historical facts.
